Dubai news update
Instead of the usual in depth dissection of whatever doom and gloom has befallen Dubai recently, I thought it might make a nice change to have round up of all the good, bad and ugly news from the emirate was in order.
The BBC is reporting that the luxury Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi beach hotel is being tested for Legionnaires’ Disease after three guests contracted the illness, with well known veteran British cricket scorer and broadcaster Bill Frindall dying from it. The hotel denies it has a problem.
The Telegraph carries the story of Marnie Pearce, the British woman sentenced to three months in prison for adultery. She has now gone into hiding with her two children. She insists she will return soon.
Following last year’s sewage on the beach scandal, The National carries the municipality’s declaration as to the safety of Dubai’s beaches. A spokesman blamed the problem on “rumours being spread by people with malicious intention.” Yes, of course.
In other news, Dubai property prices may fall by up to 50% according to The Kaleej Times; the Gulf News brings us the uplifting tale of the Dubai police’s rescue of some Iranian sailors from a sinking ship.
And finally…The Times of India tells the tale of an Indian man caught cross-dressing and applying mascara in the Mall of the Emirates. Apparently he was practising for a Bollywood role. As it was his first offence he has been handed a suspended sentence of six months in prison, and a 10,000 dirham (2,700 US dollar) fine. The prosecution, of course, are appealing, seeking a stiffer punishment.
